A New Fascination; Buffalo

Trish Stevenson / Comment on this

I have always and forever loved horses, wild or tamed and they make it into most of my paintings. Well, since I have been hanging out at Theodore Roosevelt National Park looking for the wild ones, I keep bumping into the bison herds there. One cannot help but be awed by these magnificent animals! So naturally they have inspired a few paintings and most likely will inspire a few more. Now I am hungry to learn more about them. I have read that a mother bison about to give birth, will wait out a freezing spring storm so that her newborn calf will have a better chance of making it. Amazing survival skills! I am looking forward to learning more about these wonderful beasts, one of the most powerful icons of the West.

Wild Horse Inspiration

Trish Stevenson / Comment on this

This original pastel painting of a bay horse soaking up the rays was inspired by my visit to the Deerwood Ranch, a wild horse ecosanctuary. This horse looked so cozy with his furry winter coat still intact, eyes half shut, enjoying the warmth. The ranch is now home to over 300 mustangs, in a beautiful setting near Laramie, Wyoming. Horse heaven! Visit their website at www.deerwoodranchwildhorseecosanctuary.com.

River Dressed in Winter

Trish Stevenson / Comment on this

This view of the Yellowstone River was painted when the ice was still thick and covered in snow. The day had a beautiful soft light that emphasized the plum and burgundy tones of the trees, some of my favorite colors in the landscape.

Now here with the last couple of warm days the river is starting to break up and the ice chunks are piling up and causing some flooding.

Lewis and Clark

Trish Stevenson / Comment on this

I always imagine the amazing Lewis and Clark Expedition when I visit the Yellowstone River, not from our home. I like to think if they came back today that they would find it much the same as it was when they were here over 200 years ago. Of course there are dirt roads leading to the river now and a few camping spots but overall I think it remains much the same, at least here in eastern Montana. Especially in the winter, it is so silent and beautiful. It is easy to fall back in time and picture the hardy explorers waking to a cold new day along the river or tramping through the green ash, cottonwoods and willows, so thick that they would never know a bear was watching their every move.

Unframed price includes free shippping in U.S.

Wild Inspiration

Trish Stevenson / 2 Comments

This painting was inspired by a trip to Teddy Roosevelt National Park last May. I was searching for the wild horses that inhabit the park and late in the afternoon was lucky enough to come across a small band. I am always excited to see them! There is just something amazing about wild horses when we are so used to seeing horses in their domesticated state. Along with these two younger horses there were a couple of mares with new babies and several other horses. They all looked a bit ragged after the winter and very focused on the new spring grass. I was impressed by their footwork on the steep hillside, no wonder they are known for being sure-footed, living in the badlands of North Dakota.

Badlands Buffalo

Trish Stevenson / Comment on this

I am so fortunate to live not far from Theodore Roosevelt National Park. With its ruggedly beautiful badlands and being home to wild horses and herds of buffalo, I get tons of inspiration. This was in May when the buffalo or bison were still wearing most of their furry winter coats. They were looking a bit thin after winter so getting full seemed to be the order of the day. The Park is located in western North Dakota near the historic town of Medora.
